What Is Cerebral Palsy?

  • Cerebral Palsy is caused by damage to the developing brain, usually occurring before, during or shortly after birth.
  • Brain damage can also occur during infancy due to infection or trauma.

East Central Alabama United Cerebral Palsy - Types

  • A person with cerebral palsy cannot fully control motor function (e.g., walking), and may also have an impairment of speech, balance, sight, hearing, or cognition.
  • Cerebral Palsy is not a disease, and not considered curable, however, education, therapy, and applied technology can help individuals with cerebral palsy lead active, independent and productive lives.

East Central Alabama United Cerebral Palsy

  • Locally, 96% of every dollar received is used to provide direct services; 4% for management, general office expense, and fundraising.
  • 65% of children and adults receiving services through UCP have primary disabilities other than Cerebral Palsy.
  • All therapeutic programs and services are provided at no cost to the families of individuals with special needs.
  • Programs and services are available to all without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, or disability.
